TERRY TIPTON Racing AUTOBIOGRAPHY
Terry Tipton, an Idaho native, first began racing at Bamberg International Speedway in Germany on a dirt track in 1974, running old Volkswagens, while still in the Army. Since he used to go to the Meridian Speedway as a kid with his brothers back in the 1960’s, he always desired to race there.
So in 1975, after his discharge, he bought his first Street Stock for $75.00. His brothers, Johnny Tipton and Gene Tipton, were already racing at Meridian Speedway, so he joined them on the track. Terry continued to race off and on for several years at the Meridian Speedway until finally retiring from racing in 1988. He also raced some at the old Super Oval Speedway in Emmett.
During those years he had several cars to include a 1963 Pontiac Spitfire, a 1963 Oldsmobile Dynamic, 1971 Dodge Polara and a 1971 Dodge Challenger. The last two cars were made to look like police cars, as Terry was also a police officer at Meridian. There were several times when he would be working security at the speedway while also racing at the same time, putting on a racing suit over top his uniform. Once he even got called into the chief’s office for “timing in” a Meridian City squad car. He says “the standing ovation he received from the audience however made up for the *** chewing he got from the chief!”
